Fresh fare with a beach backdr
Posted On 10/17/2010 20:33:32 by Adaioo

Just a shell's throw from the sand dunes at Waimairi Beach is Beach Cafe. So close that you can hear the waves breaking, the cafe has been themed to match its enviable position.

Giving a real seaside feel, grass fencing frames a paved courtyard complete with beach grasses and stone tables. Shade sails, hammocks and hanging chairs add to the holiday atmosphere. A large play area keeps little ones safe while their parents relax over breakfast or lunch after a stroll at the water's edge.

Leading off the courtyard, the interior is smart and contemporary, with an enclosed deck for al fresco dining.

Full breakfast and lunch menus offer fresh, modern cafe food. The beach location has led the owners to introduce a range of seafood items. Fish, including snapper and groper, is flown in from Auckland twice a week. Fresh tuna is making an appearance on the summer menu and duck is being introduced. Dishes have been planned to match the upbeat decor - an all-in-one experience worth the short drive from the city.

"To start with, the cafe served the basics like sausage rolls, buns and sandwiches," owner Tanya Kiyanova says. "Since taking over almost two years ago we have changed the menu and people love it.

"They enjoy the experience of getting something exciting that they can't get anywhere else."

With aspirations of being the "best cafe in Christchurch", she says, "We have a great team of professional people on hand, including head chef Richard Rayner, who has had experience in Andorra, Spain and Greece. We serve European and Middle Eastern dishes, some of which were inspired by Richard's travels."

Professional staff members include creative chef Gina Dowell and Jess Hope, who takes care of all baking. Items like sauces and chutneys are made on site. As for coffee, award-winning barista Debbie Faith has about 10 years of experience in the industry.

And man's best friend has not been forgotten either - treats are on the menu for visiting canines.

Fully licensed, the cafe caters for functions such as birthday and Christmas parties, and, with beach weddings a popular choice for couples during summer, a reception lunch at Beach Cafe after the ceremony is certainly an appropriate option.
