Protect kids from the sun

PARENTS have been given tips on how to keep their children safe in the sun.

Youngsters and their parents were visited by NHS Plymouth recently, offering advice and guidance on how to stay sunburn-free this summer.

Lorraine Wilkinson, cancer awareness and screening project assistant for NHS Plymouth, said: "Nobody wants their children to spend the entire summer indoors so it is important to understand how to properly protect them against the harm the sun can do.

"Making parents aware of the dangers of the sun for their children and how they can successfully protect them is very important."

Part of the visit, which took place at Action for Children's Nomony Children's Centre in Cattedown, included the SMART message: Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm; Make sure they never burn; Aim to cover them up with T-shirt, hat and sunglasses; Remember to take extra care with children; Use factor 30 sun cream.

"If you follow the SMART advice and make sure your children have factor 30 sun lotion applied and drink plenty of water, they will be well protected from the sun," said Ms Wilkinson.
