Title: Edinburgh Fringe success at To

Blog Entry: THE Tolmen Centre, Constantine, presents The Sociable Plover in Cornwall for one night only on Sunday as part of its national tour. Last month, the writing/directing partnership of Guy Masterson and Tim Whitnall won the prestigious Olivier Award for their other collaboration, Morecambe, a oneman homage to Eric Morecambe, which has become a national hit. Their other joint project The Sociable Plover is another wonderful example of their work together, with Guy Masterson himself taking an acting role (opposite Ronnie Toms) with Tim Whitnall directing his own play. It was thoroughly deserving of its many starry reviews at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe where it was a sell-out success. Among many plaudits, the Daily Mirror described it as "utterly brilliant". The Sociable Plover is part black comedy, part tense thriller. It will make you laugh out loud, and then hold you spellbound as the plot develops to a gripping climax. The setting is a birdwatchers' hide on the Suffolk marshes. An obsessive twitcher seeks his ultimate ornithological box-tick - a sighting of the eponymous Sociable Plover (yes it really exists). But events spiral into a dense, taut drama as a mysterious stranger appears. If you thought no drama could possibly be made out of birdwatching, prepare to be surprised. This is the third visit of a Guy Masterson production to the Tolmen Centre in the last year. Last year the theatre presented the memorable Scaramouche Jones as one of the drama highlights of the 2009 spring season, and this was followed by Masterson's epic oneman version of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood. The Sociable Plover is a worthy follow-up and will not disappoint those who appreciate small-scale theatre of real quality. The performance starts at 7.30pm and tickets are Pounds 9/Pounds 8 from the box office on 01326 341353 with Arts Council free tickets available for under 26s.
